Comparative assessment of the efficacy of lumbar facet joint nerve block and lumbar facet joint radiofrequency denervation in patients with low back pain.

Part of Topic

BACKGROUND•Facet joints are articulation of the superior and inferior articular processes of adjacent vertebra
•Innervation: medial branches of the dorsal rami of the spinal nerves from the L1/4 levels
•Lumbar facet joint (LFJ) related pain is reported to have a prevalence of 15-45%.1
•Interventional modalities:
ØIntraarticular injections & medial branch blocks
ØMedial branch radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
•Literature largely shows equivocal results with regards to efficacy of RFA over steroid blocks.
