UNDER PRESSURE: THE AAJT-S FOR NONCOMPRESSIBLE TRUNCAL HEMORRHAGE
Poster Presenter
Part of Topic
Uncontrolled internal bleeding in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis is the leading cause of preventable death among service members injured in combat, as these injuries cannot be controlled with tourniquets or direct pressure. Because definitive treatment typically requires surgery at a hospital, many casualties do not reach care in time, and more than 80% of those with severe internal bleeding do not survive. This project will evaluate the Abdominal Aortic and Junctional Tourniquet-Stabilized (AAJT-S), a belt-like device that can be rapidly applied to increase intra-abdominal pressure and slow bleeding until surgical care is available. The study will first determine optimal device positioning and inflation in cadavers, followed by testing in a large animal model of combat-related internal hemorrhage to assess survival, blood loss, and physiologic stability. If effective, this technology could provide combat medics with a rapid, noninvasive tool to control internal bleeding in austere environments and improve survival on the battlefield.
