OBJECTIVE Authors wanted to study the role of Uterine Artery Embolization in treatment of Uterine Polyps
DESIGN Case series
SETTING Hameed Latif Hospital is a 324 bedded tertiary care and post graduate teaching hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.
PATIENTS 10 patients with MRI confirmed uterine polyps were studied pre and postprocedure. Data collected from results of procedures done from March 2021 to August 2022.
MAIN OBJECTIVES Outcome was based on improved Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB), Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB), Health related Quality of Life (HRQOL), Improvement in Anemia, Uterine size Regression with immense socially unacceptable concerns towards loss of virginity in unmarried females.
RESULTS 10 patients Age 23-45 years were selected for study. Bleeding was a presenting symptom in 8 patients and pain was a presenting symptom in 2 patients among total of 10 patients all patients had Anemia before UAE with severely compromised quality of life. All patients underwent selective bilateral uterine artery embolization using Embosphere 300-500 micron particles. Of all patients undergoing embolization, at last follow-up (mean, 12 months), 100% were able to save there uteri and avoid Uterine Surgery;and had moderate to marked improvement in all of their symptoms. All of these patients also had complete clearance of uterine polyps (spontaneous expulsion of polyps), correction of blood loss anemia, uterine size regression as well as retention of virginity. This is a breakthrough specially for those with cultural values, treating HMB because of polyp in virgo intacta females without disturbing their anatomy. Selective uterine artery embolization might be the future management strategyforsuch cases.
CONCLUSION Endovascular Embolization of Uterine Polyps has shown guaranteed success and should be considered as first line of treatment as compared to any of the other invasive treatments.
