ROLE OF PRE AND POSTTREATMENT INCONTINENCE IMPACT QUESTIONNAIRE IN STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE

Part of Topic

Urogynaecology/Pelvic Floor

BACKGROUND

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common problem in multiparous women and adversely affect quality of life. Need exists for assessing and to see the impact of treatment in quality of life in them.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the role of Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ) in assessing the impact of SUI on quality of life of women and to see the effect of treatment on its improvement.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 40 women presented to gynaecological outpatient department of a tertiary referral hospital with symptoms and signs of SUI were included in the study. Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ) was calculated in all of them. They underwent treatment as per hospital protocol and clinical situation like conservative treatment (4, 10% women) in group 1, Burch’s colposuspension (18, 45% women) in group 2 and tension free obturator tape (18, 45% women) in group 3, IIQ again calculated 6 months after treatment.

RESULTS

Mean age, parity and body mass index was 41.6 years, 2.73 and 24.2 kg/m2 respectively. Overall mean IIQ before treatment was 45.96±16.35 (40.18 in group 1, 46.86 in group 2, 46.12 in group 3). Overall mean IIQ after treatment decreased significantly to 21.14±7.89 (p 0.01) (23.18 in group 1, 20.83 in group 2 and 21.16 in group 3). There was significant difference in mean posttreatment IIQ in the three groups

CONCLUSION

Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ) is a useful questionnaire to quantify the impact of SUI on quality of life and can assess impact of medical or surgical treatment on SUI.
