Background
An ectopic pregnancy (EP) is any pregnancy implanted outside of the endometrial cavity, and can be intrauterine or extrauterine. In the UK, incidence is 11:1000 pregnancies, with an estimated 11, 000 EP diagnosed each year and 2–3% of early pregnancy unit attendance.
Most women have no identifiable risk factors. EP can lead to significant physiological and psychological adverse effects on women.
Early recognition and prompt treatment is vital to achieve good outcome and to minimize complications from rupture EP, 0.2:1000 reported mortality rate of ruptured EP.
