Ferrin as a screening tool for iron deficiency in pregnancy with or without anaemia. A preventave approach to a big problem!

In the UK, the prevalence of anaemia was found to be 24% in a multi-centre national study [1]. Iron deficiency with or without anaemia, is associated with maternal fatigue, potentially, poorer quality of life and increased risk of postpartum depression [1]. A serum ferritin level of <30μg/l in pregnancy is indicative of iron deficiency.

Pregnancy Anaemia Management Scotland (PRaMS), a Scottish Government supported national project to reduce antenatal anaemia by treating iron deficiency, is currently being implemented. A pilot for this project was underway in our institution in March 2021 which included screening ferritin levels at booking and 28 weeks rather than wait for anaemia to develop and then check ferritin levels.

We sought to identify compliance with screening and prevalence of iron deficiency at booking and 28 weeks. We also investigated the prevalence of anaemia pre-delivery and postnatally in this cohort.
