Development and Application of a Preceptor Training Program
(Basic Course)
The preceptorship system is a program that experienced nurses act as mentors for new nurses.
In NCC Korea, preceptors provide one-on-one training for six to eight weeks to help new nurses perform independent tasks.
However, preceptors may experience work overload during the preceptorship period and lack educational opportunities.
Help preceptors understand new graduate nurses, learn effective teaching methods, and improve clinical nursing practices to become better mentors.
Investigated and Analyzedpreceptor education program operation statusand preceptor workload, at the National Cancer Center (NCC) Korea.
Conducted surveysfor program development to preceptors.
Developed nursing skill education programsbased on NCC Korea’s nursing standards, reflecting the survey results.
Increased training frequencyfrom the previous one to three times in 2022.
We developedfiveprograms: Intravenous Nursing, Management of Central Venous Catheters, Urinary Catheterization, Oxygen Therapy and Airway Suctioning, and Blood Transfusion Nursing.
Operated three timesof training programsin 2022 (May, June, and August)
Training Course Completion Rates: 22.9% (2021-2022, averaged) → 71.5% (2022, cumulative, goal achieved)
Training Course Satisfaction: Overall 4.15 points (2021-2022, averaged) → 4.7 points (2022) (goal achieved)
We discovered an increase in the training course completion rate and overall satisfaction among trainees.
We will continue to enhance the training program and also develop an advanced preceptor training course through ongoing quality improvement activities.
We will monitor the long-term effects of implementing this new preceptor training program continuously.
