Posterior cantilevered resin-bonded fixed partial denture as an alternative to implant restoration

Part of Topic

Case Presentation

WHEN DENTAL IMPLANTS AREN’T POSSIBLE

Implant treatment may not always be possible:

•Lack of bone width
•Convergent adjacent roots
•Grafting procedures are not feasible
•Financial
•Medical comorbidities

OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS

•Removable Partial Denture
•Not ideal to restore single edentulous site
•Fixed Partial Denture
•Conventional crown preparations remove 63-73% of tooth structure
•Resin-Bonded FPD
•More conservative
•Zirconia single retainer RB-FPDs have promising clinical outcomes

PREPARATION DESIGN

•Inlay, Onlay, or Veneer retainers
•Shown to withstand loads within the critical range of maximal loads during mastication

Must allow minimal connector dimension of 9mm2

TREATING ZIRCONIA AND THE TOOTH

•Zirconia
•Air particle abrade with Aluminum Oxide
•MDP-containing primer
•Tooth
•Etch with phosphoric acid

DELIVERY AND OCCLUSION

•Ensure cleansability
•No excursive contacts
•Light MIP contact
