BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Vascular access care in the paediatric population constitutes a crucial aspect of the lifespan of medical devices. Therefore, it is essential to monitor such practices and assess how they are being carried out. The objective is to enhance these practices and improve the quality of intravenous therapy at paediatric population.
METHODS
A multicenter, observational-descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample included neonatal and paediatric patients from six hospitals in the Valencian Community. Data collection comprised four periods (2 pre-intervention and 2 post-intervention) from April 2022 to May 2023, including two training periods.
RESULTS
Regarding the overall INC-PED index across the four periods, the average score was 7.60 (±1.10) out of 10 ( p<0,001). There was a progressive increase in the INCATIV index score from the beginning to the end, accentuated by training activities (marked with a star in graphic 1) between C1 and C2, as well as between C3 and C4. Concerning dressing types, there was a decrease in the use of those categorized as not recommended: C1 (48.44%), C2 (36.44%), C3 (32.73%), and C4 (26.98%). Conversely, there was an increase in those categorized as recommended: C1 (51.56%), C2 (63.56%), C3 (67.27%), and C4 (73.02%).
CONCLUSIONS
Both the INCATIV index score and adherence to good practices improved following the training received by the staff. This evidence supports the notion that such training initiatives are necessary and effective in enhancing the quality of paediatric vascular access care. Furthemore, we found a positive correlation between the result of our index and the observer’s subjective evaluation.
