Development in insertion and aftercare of peripherally inserted central catheters – a single center experience.

Part of Topic

Development in insertion and aftercare of peripherally inserted central catheters – a single center experience.

Background

•Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) frequently serves as the device of first choice for the administration of oncological treatment.
•From January 2015 to November 2023 we implanted 2106 PICCs for total permanence of 273,022 catheter-days, mostly for immunochemotherapy administration (85%).

Objectives and methods

•We present a retrospective analysis evaluating development in insertion process and aftercare of PICCs during 9-year period at one of the largest hematological/oncological centers in Czechia.

Conclusions

•PICC represents a safe vascular access option for patients undergoing immunochemotherapy.
•We can appreciate the contribution of newly introduced methods (iEKG, tunneling, securing with subcutaneously anchored device) in insertion process and aftercare of this vascular access.
•We detected low incidence of catheter related infections during the whole observed period.
•Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of the center's and also each individual's experience with this type of catheter, the necessity of continuous education of medical and non-medical personnel in the topic of vascular access.
