A Safe & Thoughtful Approach to Vascular Access Training

Background

The majority of our vascular access devices (VADs) are inserted and managed by our vascular access service (VAS) RNs. The ability to successfully place a VAD is highly dependent on operator skill. We recognized the need to standardize training and competency for USGPIV and PICC placement across VAS nurse teams throughout the institution to ensure consistent, safe care for our patients. Additionally, we recognized an opportunity to advance VAS nurses scope of practice to include arterial punctures for labs and arterial catheter placement.
