Dr Sobia Luqman, Dr Nosheela Javed, Dr Tahreem Sehar,
Background: Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury that primarily affects women in low-resource settings, leading to severe physical, social, psychological, and economic consequences. Objective: This study aims to explore the multifaceted impact of obstetric fistula on women, focusing on its social, psychological, and economic dimensions, as well as the healthcare access and family support provided to affected individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at PIMS Hospital Islamabad during July 2020 to July 2023. A total of 220 patients were added in the study. Participants were aged >18 years, diagnosed with fistula resulting from obstructed or prolonged labor, and have not undergone prior surgical treatment for the condition were added in the study. Results: 75% of women experienced social stigma and exclusion, while 80% reported feelings of depression and anxiety. The majority of women (70%) were unable to work due to the condition, resulting in a loss of income. Additionally, 60% of women had not received any treatment for their fistula, and of those who did, most received treatment after a significant delay. Family support was found to be lacking, with 60% of participants reporting no assistance from their families. Furthermore, 40% of women faced major financial barriers to accessing treatment. Conclusion: It is concluded that obstetric fistula has severe social, psychological, and economic consequences for women, with social exclusion, mental health distress, and financial instability being major challenges.
