INTRODUCTION
Obstetric haemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. At Medway Maritime Hospital, 40% of deliveries are complicated by postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). Massive Obstetric Haemorrhage (MOH), where there is blood loss of more than 2000ml constitute 3% of such cases. Prompt recognition and management is essential to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality.
It is expected that for all cases of MOH (blood loss of ≥ 2.0 L), the following steps should be followed:
AIM
To improve care in the management of women with Massive Obstetric Haemorrhage (MOH) in our unit as per our trust guidelines, identify common risk factors and areas for improvement.
METHOD
A retrospective review of case notes of patients managed for MOH over a period of 6 months. Data was collected on common risk factors for PPH as well as how cases were managed according to the recommended protocol.
CONCLUSION
There is still room for improvement in the management of MOH, especially in documentation of events during and after MOH management.
