Case Report: Psoriasis in Pregnancy, its Burden and Overlooked Complications
Charlene Robelle Locaylocay-Ramos, MD, FPOGS
SUMMARY
Global burden of psoriasis is estimated to be 0.09 - 11.4% in different countries. Majority of psoriasis improves during pregnancy, in view of the facts about its hormonal and immunological interplay. Development of clinical practice guidelines and algorithms in handling pregnant patients with psoriasis may help us to lessen or even solve the burden of disease. Screening of patients for possible risk of psoriatic arthritis offers avoidance of its disabling and disfiguring results. Access to health care professionals / specialists and further training or exposure of the primary care physician; standard diagnostic tools, are all important facets to meet the demands of the illness. Preparation of management algorithms on screening, treatment and monitoring should be prioritized.
