Hypothesis
By providing advocacy related educational material, current University at Buffalo Anesthesiology Residents will have a greater understanding of local and national advocacy efforts.
Introduction
•National movement to incorporate advocacy into anesthesiology residency programs
•Idea for educational intervention
•Slideshow - Three tiers of participation: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced
•Goals and methods of Advocacy, NYSSA, ASA, and PACs
•Incorporation of a formal advocacy component of UB Anesthesiology Residency Curriculum
Methods
•Residents contacted via email, requiring google verification
•Pre-presentation survey asking 6 questions
•Questions covering: Advocacy, NYSSA, ASA, PACs
•Residents provided 19 slide educational PowerPoint presentation to be viewed at a self-directed pace
•Post-presentation survey asking same 6 questions
•Residents given 9-day window to complete both phases
Results
•Average score prior to presentation was 76.47%
•Average score after intervention was 90.48%
•Data analyzed using paired t-test, t-score 3.4001 with a P value of 0.0192.
•Mean of pre-presentation score minus post-presentation score -0.140 (CI, -0.2459, -0.342)
•Three residents lost to follow-up as they did not complete both tests
•Data statistically significant to show the presentation increased survey scores
Conclusion
•After sending residents the advocacy presentation, they showed significant improvement in their test scores with questions involving advocacy and the roles of the ASA, NYSSA, and PACs in anesthesiologist advocacy.
•Results suggest that incorporating formal advocacy training into the University at Buffalo Anesthesiology Residency Program could enhance residents' understanding and engagement with professional advocacy efforts.
Limitations
•Google access
•Sample size
•Resident compliance
•Self-directed learning
