INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE

Patient experience is a key component of healthcare quality and fundamental for the delivery of person- and family-centered care. However, cross-cultural cancer-specific patient reported experience measures (PREMs) are scarce.
The SCAPE questionnaire (Arditi et al., 2022), originally adapted from the 2016 version of the NHS Cancer Patient Experience Survey developed in the UK (NHS, 2023), evaluates patient’s experience with cancer care throughout the care pathway and has been translated and adapted into Swiss Italian, French, and German, and English.

Objective: To translate and culturally adapt the Swiss Cancer Patient Experiences (SCAPE) questionnaire (version 2023) into European Spanish, Greek, Polish and Slovene within the context of LIVERATION (https://liveration.eu), a European clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of a cancer liver surgery.

METHODS

1) review and adaptation of the English version of the SCAPE questionnaire for the LIVERATION project.
2) Forward-backward translation and adaptation of the questionnaire consisting of a multi-step, dynamic, and centralized review process:

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The questionnaire has been translated and culturally adapted into European Spanish, Greek, Polish and Slovene.

 Two versions have been developed:

- A shorter version specifically adapted for the LIVERATION project.
- A version akin the SCAPE English 2023 version.

The questionnaire is already being used for the LIVERATION project: either in its final form or in the pre-testing stage.

Understandability, inaccuracies, ambiguities and discrepancies are being reviewed by a central body and discussed throughout the process in an iterative manner, as needed.

Lessons learned:

- Professional healthcare translators familiar with the process of translation and adaptation of instruments are recommended.
- Some patients have expressed that the questionnaire is too long (83 and 92 questions for the LIVERATION and original versions, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS
- The dynamic process followed has effectively guided the cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the questionnaire.
- The final versions of the questionnaire will be made available to researchers and practitioners interested in evaluating cancer patients’ experiences to improve quality of care.
- Future work will focus on evaluating the psychometric properties of the instrument.
