Nurses who play a vital role should have sound Knowledge of Safe IV practices and demonstrate Competent skills. This study aims to bring out successful outcomes by ensuring patient safety.

Aim
To assess Nurses’ bedside practice, Knowledge on IV Policies & infection prevention strategies.
·To implement best practices related to safe IV line practices.
·To reassess Nurses’ bedside practice, Knowledge on IV Policies & infection prevention strategies after implementing best practices

Methodoloy

Descriptive Study Design was used for the study. All Nurses working in wards and ICUs were the study population with the setting of wards and ICU s. Random sampling technique was used and the sample size was 63 during  Audit I and 100 During Audit II .The Validated Data Collection Tool has 3 sections.Sec-A Observational Checklist with 11 criteria, Sec-B assessing Knowledge on Peripheral IV Line Policies, Sec-C assessing Knowledge on Techniques in Preventing  Peripheral Line Infection With the score Interpretation as Adequate - 85-100 %, Moderately adequate -60-84 %,Inadequate <=50%. After Audit I, Implemented Best Practices and Post Implementation audit done during 2022

Results

The Average Percentage of Nurses Bed side Practice on safe IV had improced from 83 to 88.8% , Knowldge of Nurses on Peripheral IV line policy had slightly decreased  from 91% to 89.8% due to Nurses Turn - over,  whereas the Knowledge of Nurses on Peripheral IV line Infection Prevention strategies had improved from 51 % to 87.8%.

Best Practices Introduced were

1.Hands-on Training session on safe IV practices using Mannequins

2.Strict Adherence to Evidenced Based Best Practices -Closed IV system, Transparent IV dressings and others  right from IV Insertion till Removal

3.Formation of Infusion Nurses Team – For Extended Coverage and Follow up

4.Clinical Supervision by Nurse Leaders for early detection & Management of IV complications

5.Video Teaching on “How to Spike, Prime, and Handle the IV Tubing's “   ( created our Own video as per Recommended Guidelines . Been shared to our      Nurses regularly –https://youtu.be/9SxAILt40ro)

Safe IV line Management
Patient satisfaction
Consultant satisfaction
Improving clinicaloutcomes

Conclusion

The bedside practice was improved from  83%  to 88.8%, knowledge on preventing IV line complications improved from 51% to 88.4% but knowledge on policy was slightly reduced from 91% to 89.8% due to Nurses Turn over. The key Interventions implemented in this study have been adopted as a standardized protocol to maintain Safe IV practices and the study is been continued once in 6 months.
