THE IMPACT OF STAFFING AND TEAMWORK ON PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY OF CARE.

The aim of the study was to examine the impact of staffing and teamwork on nurse-assessed adverse patient events and perceived quality of care in the Sultanate of Oman.

Design: Cross-sectional

Sampling: Proportional stratified clustered

Sample and Setting: staff nurses, Oman.

Measurements:

•Staffing: average number of patients nurses cared for.

•Teamwork: Assessment for Collaborative Environments tool.

•Adverse events: Adverse Patient Events scale.

•Quality of care: Rating of the overall quality of patient care over the last year.

Analysis: Descriptive statistics and Multivariate regression

Key Findings:

Staffing and Safety

•Each additional increase in the patient-to-nurse ratio was associated with a 0.062-point increase in adverse events

(β = 0.062, p = 0.018).

Teamwork and Safety

•A negative significant relationship

(β = - 0.132, p < 0.01)

Teamwork and Quality

• A positive significant relationship
