MINIMAL INVASIVE PORT ACCESS MITRAL VALVE REPLACEMENT IN SITUS INVERSUS:A CASE REPORT
ABSTRACT
Introduction : Situs inversus totalis is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the abnormal positioning of the heart and thoracic and abdominal organs. Data related to heart valve diseases in these patients are limited, and a detailed examination is essential before deciding on a surgical approach.
Presentation of the case : A 67-year-old female patient presented with exertional dyspnea. A chest X-ray showed dextrocardia. CT and echocardiography revealed situs inversus(SI)with severe mitral stenosis and regurgitation. The patient underwent a mitral valve replacement through a left thoracotomy incision using a minimally invasive port access technique.
Discussion : Appropriate preoperative planning can guide cardiac surgery in patients with dextrocardia. In this case, we report on a minimally invasive port-access mitral valve replacement in a patient with situs inversus.
Conclusion: Minimally invasive port-access approaches can be used safely to achieve successful surgical and cosmetic outcomes in patients with complex cardiac anomalies. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery can be successfully performed even in unusual conditions such as dextrocardia.
