POST-SURGICAL INTERCOSTAL NEUROMA AFTER BREAST IMPLANT: A CASE STUDY

Intro

•This case discusses an incident of pain and subsequent treatment following a post-surgical intercostal neuroma after breast implantation.

Case Description

•33 yo female presented to pain clinic in July 2024 with chronic right-sided axillary pain around surgical site that started after breast implantation.
•US-guided nerve block to intercostal nerves was performed with relatively good relief.

Discussion

•Post-surgical breast pain has an incidence of approximately 63% with 38% in the breast augmentation population.
•A neuroma is a disorganized bundle of nerve fibers that typically develops because of induced trauma.
•Nerve blocks can also be therapeutic when combined with steroid, but neuromas can reform, so surgical resection may be the next step for complete resolution.

Conclusion

•Currently there is a lack of literature for post-surgical breast pain specifically due to formation of an intercostal neuroma.

Post-Surgical Neuroma after breast implant can develop due to surgical trauma and be treated with a nerve block commonly to the intercostal nerves
