Multiple and recurrent fibroid polyps causing intussusception and subsequent obstruction have been reported in a 47 year old female, resulting in multiple segmental small bowel resections with end to end anastomoses. Both histopathology results reported benign inflammatory fibroid polyps, with no increased risk of malignant potential. A similar case occurred in her aunt in the United States who also underwent multiple small bowel resections for partial gut obstruction due to intussusception within a span of 10 years.
A similar series of case report studies was done last 1984 by P. Anthony et. al naming this phenomenon Devon Syndrome wherein multiple and recurrent inflammatory fibroid polyps occurred in three generations of females of the Devon Family in the United States. Chromosomal studies were normal and no cancer risk was identified. This case report presents two cases affecting two generations of females from a family of Filipino descent, with a similar presentation of recurrent intussusception secondary to histologically verified inflammatory fibroid polyps.
In a Filipino family spanning two generations, the recurrence of Devon syndrome - inflammatory fibroid polyps in the small intestine has been documented. This familial occurrence has affected exclusively one female member in each generation, forming a direct lineage. Over a span of 10 years, both patients underwent resection procedures for the polyps causing intussusception. Notably none of the patients in the said generation exhibit any known allergies, dietary preferences, or gastrointestinal infections.
