OBJECTIVE:To determine the diagnostic accuracy of Intraoperative Frozen Section (IFS) for evaluation of ovarian tumors in order to decide the extent of surgical management
DESIGN:It was a retrospective validation study
METHODOLOGY:
Detailed history and ultrasonography reports of 88 patients were reviewed and patients who had benign looking tumors on preoperative or intraoperative assessment with raised Ca-125 levels, young patients with ovarian mass, those who wished to preserve fertility and tumors of uncertain nature were included. During staging laparotomy at least two sections of the specimen were sent for frozen section to the pathologist. The surgery was completed according to the IFS results. IFS reported tumors as benign, borderline or malignant, without any definitive histological type. These were then compared with the histopathology of the specimen.
RESULTS:The diagnostic accuracy of IFS was 90.9%.
CONCLUSION: IFS has a high diagnostic accuracy in intraoperative evaluation of patients with ovarian massess which can help the surgeons to decide the extent and nature of surgery and hence can reduces complications and morbidity
