Patient experience of surgical management of miscarriage: an evaluation of pathway change
Poster Presenter
Part of Topic
General gynaecology
•Experiencing a miscarriage can be a highly emotional time for patients
•At a tertiary unit, stable patients who were counselled about their management options for miscarriage and opted for surgical management, were booked onto the emergency theatre list to undergo their procedure.
•Ideally, with these patients being medically stable, they would have their procedure and go home the same day (day-case procedure).
•However, if more urgent cases arose, the planned surgical management of miscarriage (SMM) could be delayed for hours or even days, with patients sometimes requiring overnight admission, waiting without a clear indication of when they could have their procedure, with potential impact on their overall psychological wellbeing.
•The present study investigated the impact of this process on patients and looked at increasing the proportion of planned SMMs carried out as a day-case procedure, with the overall aim to improve patient experience.
