Enhancing Final Year Confidence: A mini-series in Early Pregnancy
Dr. Keerthi Morgan-Shelbourne (ST1) & Dr. Rachel Greenwood (ST6) Royal United Hospital NHS Foundation Trust & Bath Academy, University of Bristol
Objectives: • To improve the confidence of our future foundation trainees. • Provide an 8 week optional mini-series of seminars and practical workshops. • To provide a safe space for final year students to ask questions with regards to the specialty
Early Pregnancy Education – why is it important? • Pre-course survey showed that 80% of students did not feel confident in Early Pregnancy Consultation or management • Skills to manage common yet complex conditions – e.g. miscarriage, hyperemesis • Complications can lead to significant morbidity and mortality • MDT approach
Results: • 25/40 attended this optional teaching • Qualitative analysis of 10 students who consistently attended all 8sessions and completed the postcourse survey: o 100 % reported that their confidence had improved in miscarriage management o 90% reported that their confidence had improved in termination consultation, management and legality o 100% reported their confidence had improved in pregnancy and pregnancy related conditions o 80% answered "Yes" as to whether O&G should be a part of 5th year placement
What's next?: • Plans to re-run this series with the next cohort of 5th years at Bath Academy in 2025 • Plan to extend this regionally to Swindon and Gloucester Academy 5th year Cohorts • Assess feedback and look at extending across other Academies within the region who teach Bristol Final Year Medical Students
Conclusion: Focus on women's health -missing in Final Yearcurricula. Poses a need to re-look at curricula. Feedback highlighted as area of concern whenentering the workforce – could this be a steptowards addressing this? Doctors-in-training teaching future doctors –empowers the future generation of doctors toprovide a high quality of evidence-based care
