OBSTETRIC OUTCOME AFTER SUCCESSFUL FISTULA REPAIR
Objectives:
To analyze the obstetric outcomes following successful fistula repair, this study aims to evaluate its impact on reproductive potential, including fertility restoration and the ability to carry a pregnancy to term. Additionally, the research seeks to identify and assess the associated maternal and neonatal risks during post-repair pregnancies, such as complications in labor, delivery outcomes, and newborn health. By addressing these critical factors, the study intends to provide evidence-based guidance for clinical management, improve counseling for patients considering conception after repair, and ensure optimal care for both mothers and infants in this unique and high-risk population.
Design:
"Obstetric Outcome After Successful Fistula Repair," holds significant importance in addressing a critical gap in maternal health care. Obstetric fistulas, often resulting from prolonged obstructed labor, have devastating physical, psychological, and social consequences for affected women. While successful repair restores anatomical and functional integrity, the impact on subsequent pregnancies remains underexplored. Understanding obstetric outcomes post-repair is essential for optimizing reproductive care, minimizing maternal and neonatal risks, and informing clinical management. This retrospective cohort study can guide evidence-based counseling for women aspiring to conceive, enhance health care strategies in resource-limited settings, and contribute to improving the quality of life for affected women.
Methodology:
The study included a sample size of 189 women with a history of successful fistula repair. Data were collected through a combination of medical record reviews and structured patient interviews, focusing on pregnancy outcomes, delivery methods, and maternal and neonatal complications. Key variables assessed included fertility rates, mode of delivery, pregnancy-related complications, and neonatal outcomes. This comprehensive approach provided insights into the obstetric outcomes and reproductive potential of women post-fistula repair, guiding clinical recommendations and care strategies.
Results:
Among the 189 patients, 60% achieved pregnancy after repair, with a live birth rate of 75% among those pregnancies. Cesarean delivery was the most common mode of delivery (80%), aimed at minimizing the risk of fistula recurrence. Maternal complications, such as preterm labor and uterine rupture, were observed in 15% of cases. Neonatal outcomes showed a perinatal mortality rate of 10% and low birth weight in 25% of live births.
Conclusion:
The study demonstrates that successful fistula repair can restore reproductive potential in a significant proportion of patients. However, there is an increased risk of maternal and neonatal complications, emphasizing the need for specialized antenatal care and delivery in well-equipped medical facilities.
