SURGICAL OUTCOMES AFTER LAPAROSCOPIC
COLORECTAL RESECTION FOR DEEP
INFILTRATING BOWEL ENDOMETRIOSIS
OBJECTIVE :
To assess the surgical outcomes and the quality of life pertaining to gastrointestinal
symptoms and sexual life after laparoscopic colorectal resection of deep infiltrating
endometriosis [DIE]
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
Retrospective case series of 230 patients who underwent laparoscopic
rectosigmod resection with colorectal anastomosis at Galaxy Care hospital, Pune, INDIA
Patient Characteristics:
median age -28 years.Symptoms include dysmenorrhoea (100%),
dyspareunia (93.5%) chronic intermentsrual pain (83.2%) bowel symptoms (42.9%)
and for infertility evaluation (74.5%)
PARAMETERS ASSESSED:
Surgical results in terms of anatomical and functional integrity of
bowel, bowel continence and quality of life pertaining to
gastrointestinal quality of life and sexual life were assessed.
CONCLUSION:
DIE surgery by segmental resection allows an overall significant longterm
improvement in pelvic pain, gastrointestinal complaints and
quality of life, as well as a negligible recurrence rate.
This improvement occurs shortly after surgery and remains stable >5
years postoperatively.
Our data demonstrate that symptomatic patients may benefit from
laparoscopic surgery for DIER with favourable long-term outcomes.
