Attitude and behavior of maternal health care providers during
child birth in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi.
BACKGROUND: Pakistan is among the most populous countries of South East Asia with very high maternal mortality rate. One of the reason of this elevated maternal mortality is non availability of skilled workers at the time of Labour . According to Pakistan Demographic and health survey around 66% of women opt for facility based births while rest of them deliver at home. The present study aims to look in to the rate of disrespect and abuse during labour in Public sector hospitals of Karachi Pakistan
METHODOLOGY:
We took a sample size of 476 postnatal women after informed consent.
The women were subjected to a prevalidated and translated performa to collect the data from the delivered women before they get discharged from the hospital
RESULTS:
Out of 466 patients:
Overall disrespect and abuse was found to be 86%.
Most common abuse was lack of introduction of health worker to the patient reported by 60% of women.
While 30% complained regarding the lack of involvement during and before the procedure.
Almost 25% participants complained that no barrier was used to cover them during the procedure.
No physical abuse was reported
