Part of Topic
Diagnosis
Fracture-related infection (FRI) requires accurate microbiological diagnosis to guide targeted antimicrobial therapy. This study evaluates the added diagnostic value of intramedullary cultures obtained using the Reamer–Irrigator–Aspirator (RIA) system alongside standard deep tissue cultures in patients with suspected FRI. RIA cultures provided complementary microbiological information, particularly in chronic/late-onset infections and in selected patients with prior antibiotic exposure.
