Comparing Educational models: A Survey of Anesthesia Resident Confidence in Performing Peripheral Nerve Blocks
Regional anesthesia has multiple benefits, including improved post-operative pain control, sparing of opioids, and shortened length of stay in the recovery room when compared to general anesthesia alone [1]. Competence in performing ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) has become an integral component of residency education. Residency programs vary in the way they structure regional training; some residency programs have residents perform blocks for their own cases as they arise throughout their training, whereas others have a dedicated block rotation [2]. In this survey study, we compare the level of exposure and confidence in trainees at programs with these two different training philosophies.
