Gender Affirmation
Disparities in the Coverage of Gender-Affirming Bottom Surgery and Fertility Services
Background
Up to 51% of transgender women and 37.5% of transgender men would have seriously considered fertility preservation if offered prior to medical transition
Fertility preservation utilization is low (<5-7%) among transgender and gender (“TGD”) individuals, barriers include:
1) Hormone therapy pause for gamete procurement (1-6 months)
2) Out-of-pocket costs ($10,000-$15,0000 for oocyte or embryo, $500-$1,000 for sperm)
3) Inability to delay transition
Oncofertility – the integration of fertility care for patients undergoing sterilizing cancer treatment
Iatrogenic Infertility – relatively novel qualifying condition for fertility preservation resulting from oncofertility advocacy
Objective
To examine the insurance coverage for TGD individuals seeking fertility services and bottom surgery
