Assessment Of Multimodal Non-opioid Analgesia In Postoperative Pain Management For Gender-affirming Mastectomy
Part of Topic
Gender Affirmation
•Multimodal analgesic postoperative pain regimens, including nerve blocks, have been well studied in prophylactic (oncologic) mastectomies
•The role of a multimodal non-opioid analgesic postoperative pain regimen has not been well studied in gender affirming mastectomy (GAM)
•Transgender and non-binary patients have an increased risk of possible opioid abuse and increased mental health disorders
•Efforts should be made to decrease opioid prescriptions for patient safety
1.Evaluate the effectiveness of multimodal non-opioid analgesic regimen (NOAR) in managing postoperative pain in GAM patients
2.Compare effectiveness of the NOAR treatment to a historical cohort using an opioid-inclusive regimen (OIR)
•Peri- and postoperative pain in patients following GAM is well controlled by a multimodal non-narcotic analgesic regimen (NOAR) of Acetaminophen (500mg) and Gabapentin (100mg) compared to postoperative pain in opioid-inclusive regimens (OIR)
•Differences between medication consumption and pain levels were negligible between the NOAR and OIR groups
•We support the sole use of non-narcotics for peri- and postoperative pain management for GAM
