Population aging has increased the prevalence of complex age-related conditions that cannot be adequately explained by a single disease category. Geriatric syndromes arise from multifactorial etiologies and are associated with adverse outcomes, including disability, hospitalization, increased healthcare utilization, and mortality.
People living with dementia may be particularly vulnerable to developing geriatric syndromes, even during the early stages of disease. However, little is known about the prevalence of these syndromes across different dementia subtypes, particularly frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Individuals with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia exhibit a substantial burden of geriatric syndromes compared with cognitively unimpaired adults.
Routine screening for geriatric syndromes using a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment may facilitate early identification of modifiable risk factors and support more comprehensive, person-centered care in dementia.
