•The Harmonised Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP) was implemented as a sub-study of the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA). (Ward, Marr et al. 2026)
•NICOLA-HCAP provides detailed cognitive phenotyping in older adults in Northern Ireland.
•Hearing impairment (HI) and vision impairment (VI) are common in later life and have each been associated with poorer cognitive outcomes. (Livingston, Huntley et al. 2024; Zhang, Zeng et al. 2025)
•Dual sensory impairment (DSI) may place older adults at greater cognitive risk, but evidence from Northern Ireland is limited.

Objective: to examine cross-sectional associations with global and domain-specific cognitive performance in community-dwelling older adults.

•VI and DSI were associated with poorer cognitive performance compared with no impairment.
•DSI was associated with approximately twice the adjusted risk of cognitive impairment, highlighting DSI as a potentially important marker of cognitive vulnerability in later life.

Limitations:

Cross-sectional design; small DSI group; hearing impairment was self-reported; cognitive testing may be influenced by sensory demands; limited representation of care-home residents.
