Abstract / Poster Summary
Background: Social isolation is a well-known modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but preventive efforts traditionally focus on older populations. However, social disconnection during young adulthood may initiate long-term emotional, motivational, and cognitive vulnerabilities that differ by sex. This critical period offers an unstudied window for lifespan-oriented dementia prevention.
Objectives: This pilot study aims to evaluate the associations between objective social isolation, subjective loneliness, and physical/emotional well-being with academic performance in young psychology students. Additionally, it seeks to establish a quantitative baseline to determine how these psychosocial factors predict academic outcomes.
Methods: Using a quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive design with non-probability convenience sampling, the study administers established tools including the Steptoe Social Isolation Index and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, alongside an ad-hoc health questionnaire. Data will be analyzed using descriptive, correlational, and multiple linear regression statistics.
Expected Outcomes & Conclusions: The preliminary findings will guide instrument adaptation for subsequent psychometric validation. Ultimately, this project establishes a foundational baseline to design early, evidence-based student support interventions , contributing novel insights into identifying early-life psychosocial risk profiles for long-term dementia prevention.
