Associations Between Multidimensional Ethnic Experiences And Domain-level Cognition In Older Adults

Part of Topic

§The prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (ADRDs) differs across ethnoracial group, with older adults of color being more likely to be diagnosed than their White counterparts1-3.
§Such disparities in ADRD burden reflect persistent health inequities that undermine healthy aging.
§While certain experiences disproportionately linked to different ethnoracial groups have been shown to shape cognition (e.g., discrimination, low socioeconomic status)4,5, the impact of other culturally-embedded experiences on cognitive functioning remain underexplored (e.g., social affiliation, comfort with mainstream culture).
§Consistent with a growing body of research, higher levels of perceived discrimination predicted worse performance across multiple domains.
§Contrastingly, higher degrees of group identification, affiliation, and discrimination were also shown to associate with better processing speed and executive function.
§Given the inextricable link between culturally-embedded experiences and identity and mental health, as well as the variable associations highlighted depending on the experiences assessed, these findings highlight a key direction for future investigations.
§Further exploration of group differences (e.g., individuals with high social affiliation vs. those with low) in both demographics and cognition are also warranted given these findings
