Background: Hearing and vision loss are common in older adults and represent potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia. Brain Health PRO/Santé Cerveau PRO (BHPro) is a Canadian online dementia-education program designed to improve dementia literacy and promote engagement in risk-reducing behaviors. However, its accessibility and effectiveness for individuals with sensory loss have not been evaluated.
Methods: SENSE-BHP is an ongoing prospective cohort study of 300 adults aged 55 years and older with mild-to-moderate vision, hearing, or dual sensory difficulties. Participants complete the 45-week BHPro program. Primary outcomes include dementia literacy, engagement in risk-reducing behaviors, and well-being. Secondary outcomes include accessibility, acceptability, usability, self-efficacy, and intervention engagement. Outcomes will be compared across sensory-loss groups and with the original BHPro cohort.
Expected Results: We anticipate improvements in dementia literacy, engagement in modifiable risk-reducing behaviors, and self-reported well-being following participation in BHPro. The study will identify accessibility needs across sensory-loss profiles and evaluate whether sensory loss influences engagement, acceptability, or effectiveness of a digital dementia-prevention intervention.
Conclusions: Findings will provide the first evaluation of BHPro among older adults with sensory loss and inform the development of sensory-inclusive dementia-prevention strategies and programs.
