We Remember How It Felt is a visual reflection inspired by my grandfather and the lived experiences that ultimately led to the creation of MemoriGems and the broader VOCES communication framework.
While dementia is often discussed through the lens of memory loss, this piece asks us to pause and consider something equally important: the emotional experiences that continue to shape identity and human connection.
The image of an older hand holding a gem with a younger one representing more than remembrance. It symbolizes the passing of stories, love, belonging, and the invisible ways we continue to hold one another even when memory changes.
Rather than presenting data, this work invites reflection.
It asks viewers to consider:
- What moments truly stay with us?
- What does it mean to preserve identity?
- How can technology, care, and communication honor the emotional experiences that remain?
Because memory is not only something we recognize.
It is something we carry, share, and offer.
As you view this piece, I invite you to think of someone whose voice, presence, or touch still lives within you.
Perhaps they are sitting beside you.
Perhaps they are far away.
Perhaps they are no longer here.
Whatever came to mind in that moment...
That feeling is what this work hopes to honor.
