Associations Between Chronic Stress And ATN Biomarkers In Alzheimer’S Disease In Latin America (ReDLat Consortium)

Poster Presenter

Nickole Marin

Part of Topic

This scientific poster from the ReDLat Consortium examines how chronic stress, measured through cumulative physiological dysregulation known as allostatic load, relates to plasma biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease in Latin American populations. The investigators evaluated a cohort of 660 participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru by measuring an Allostatic Load Index composed of 13 biomarkers across neuroendocrine, metabolic, immune, and cardiovascular systems. They then analyzed these findings against plasma Alzheimer's biomarkers using linear regression models adjusted for age, sex, and education. The results reveal that higher total and metabolic stress burdens are linked to reduced amyloid levels, while metabolic burden specifically associates with increased tau levels. Interestingly, an elevated immune burden correlates with a decrease in tau levels, highlighting that distinct stress pathways uniquely influence amyloid and tau pathologies. Furthermore, the sensibility analysis demonstrated significant sex differences, showing that women exhibit consistently higher total, metabolic, and immune allostatic load index values than men across all analyzed age groups. Ultimately, the study concludes that chronic stress highlights a potential biological pathway linking social adversity and Alzheimer's disease in Latin America, suggesting that allostatic load may represent a relevant marker for risk identification and prevention in the region.
