This digital illustration explores the relationship between what we can measure and what we experience.
As someone who conducts neuropsychological assessments, I spend hours with participants. During these sessions, people often reveal parts of themselves through the stories they tell, the memories they return to, and the ways they approach different tasks.
The artwork shows a participant completing a visuospatial memory task, copying and later recalling a complex figure.
Standardised tests are valuable tools that help us identify cognitive changes, understand difficulties, and support diagnosis and treatment. Yet test results can’t fully capture a person's resilience, emotions, relationships, or the lived experiences that shape their cognitive health. Spending time with participants makes it clear that these measures only tell part of the story.
This piece sits at the intersection of neuropsychology and art. It invites viewers to consider what is gained through objective measurement and what remains beyond the reach of data alone. It highlights the importance of scientific measurement while recognising that understanding the mind also requires an appreciation of the experiences and memories that cannot easily be quantified.
