Dementia Mortality In Brazil: A Nationwide Time Series Analysis (2019-2024)

Part of Topic

INTRODUCTION: Brazil is undergoing a demographic transition, resulting in a shift in the epidemiological profile and a consequent increase in aging-related diseases, particularly dementia. This study aimed to analyze temporal trends in dementia mortality in Brazil and its five macroregions between 2019 and 2024. METHODS: This nationwide time series study was conducted using data from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS) and population estimates from IBGE. Mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants were calculated, stratified by sex, macroregion, and age groups (60–69, 70–79, and ≥80 years). Temporal trends were analyzed using Prais-Winsten regression models. Annual Percentage Change (APC) and respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were estimated, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: A total of 186,031 deaths were analyzed during the period. Alzheimer's disease (ICD-10 G30) was the leading cause (87.2%). Females accounted for the majority of deaths (65.2%). Low educational attainment predominated among the deceased (up to 3 years of schooling: 42.9%), and a significant percentage of deaths occurred at home (34.5%).National mortality rates showed significant increasing trends across all age strata, with the steepest increase in individuals aged ≥80 years: 60–69 years (APC: 5.5%), 70–79 years (APC: 7.3%), and ≥80 years (APC: 7.2%). Regional analysis demonstrated that the steepest increases occurred in the North (APC 60-69 years: 12.3%; APC ≥80 years: 11.7%), Northeast (APC ≥80 years: 9.2%), and South (APC 70-79 years: 9.2%; APC ≥80 years: 9.3%) regions (Table 1 and Figure 1). CONCLUSIONS: Recorded dementia mortality shows growth in Brazil, with greater acceleration in the North, Northeast, and South regions. These findings reflect both population aging and increased disease burden in specific regions of the country, reinforcing the need for public health strategies focused on early diagnosis and equitable access to specialized care in the context of advanced aging.
