Design of a longitudinal interdisciplinary oncology clinical preceptorship for early medical students

Current trainees in medical school may be underprepared to manage a growing population of patients with cancer and survivors in their future practices.  We conducted a targeted needs assessment of faculty educators in oncology-based fields to develop an interdisciplinary oncology curriculum framed on a longitudinal integrated clerkship model.  We built the curriculum on liver cancer, with the expectation that students will follow a group of their own patients from new diagnosis, intake into the transplant process, downstaging with local-regional therapy, and in cases where patients are ineligible for transplant, treatment with chemotherapy and radiation.
