Frailty is a multidimensional syndrome resulting in the loss of physical and cognitive reserve that leads to increased vulnerability to adverse events. Frailty scores are calculated based on information already gathered and do not require extra training or expertise. The functional baseline of patients is an important consideration when deciding on admission to intensive care units. With the increasing interest in frailty, we considered whether a frailty score would be a useful risk stratification tool in critically unwell surgical patients admitted to a district general hospital intensive care unit.
