CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION WITH SAME DAY DISCHARGE FOR HYSTERECTOMIES: DGH EXPERIENCE
OBJECTIVES:
Assess the carbon footprint (CF) reduction from same-day discharge (SDD) hysterectomies at Walsall Manor Hospital (WMH).
Evaluate replacing the universal laparoscopic tray with diagnostic and hysterectomy-specific trays in line with NHS Net Zero Surgery goals.
Explore how anaesthetic practices contribute to CF reduction.
METHODS:
Reviewed annual surgical records for hysterectomy volumes and SDD rates from 2022-20244.
Review instrument tray configurations.
Consulted theatre sustainability and anaesthetic teams on Greener NHS protocols
CF savings calculated using estimates of ~37.9 kg CO₂ per inpatient day from the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition.
Literature review on SDD safety and carbon emissions in hysterectomy settings.
