The UK’s First Uterus Transplant Clinic: A Service Evaluation

Background:

Uterine transplantation (UTx) has been proven to be a viable fertility treatment for absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI) with over 70 live births from more than 130 transplants

The UK UTx team now run two UTx programmes:

•The INSITU (INvestigational Study Into Transplantation of the Uterus) deceased donor (DBD) clinic trial
•The living donor (LD) clinical programme

Methods

A  retrospective service evaluation of the first 18 months’ activity of the UTx clinic was undertaken

Results

Patient pathway

Clinic Activity

Recipient Characteristics

Motivations for pursuing UTx

Conclusion

There is a clear demand for UTx, with the UK clinic providing the only pathway for patients to access UTx in the UK.

Now that UTx has been shown to be a viable fertility restoring treatment for people with AUFI, a long-term funding model needs to be established to sustain both the LD and DBD programmes
