Establishing a new international consortium for postpartum contraception (PICON)

Part of Topic

Sexual Health and Contraception

Establishing a new international consortium for postpartum contraception (PICON)
Kirsten Black, Michelle Cooper, Evelyn Smith Romero, Jessica Botfield, Sharon Cameron

Background:

•Contraception services  provided as part of care during childbirth increases postpartum contraceptive (PPC) use and can reduce unintended pregnancies and pregnancies that are too closely spaced.
•Globally, unintended and closely spaced births are a significant public health issue as they are associated with increased maternal, newborn, and child morbidity and mortality

Objective:

•Interdisciplinary networks are an effective way to connect research questions, methodologies, and influence practice.
•This project will develop the first global network of clinicians, researchers, policy makers and people with lived experience to examine how best to improve access to immediate PPC.

Design: Establishing and developing the Postpartum Contraception International Consortium (PICON)

Methods:

•We aim to formally ‘launch’ PICON at the RCOG Congress to raise awareness amongst key professionals in the field.
•Interested parties are invited to contact us to represent their region as part of the network.
•Existing professional links will be used to identify other key global opinion leaders.
•Digitals tools (website, social media) will developed to support public and wider professional engagement.

Results: Once a formal network is established, we will conduct a structured survey to scope current global provision of PPC and inform future priorities for the consortium.

Conclusions: PICON will investigate global best practice and capacity building for immediate provision of postpartum modern contraceptives.
