Prophylactic Effectiveness of Vacuum Assisted Closure for Highrisk Patients  Undergoing Cardiovascular Surgery through Median Sternotomy

I.Takazawa, Y.Misawa  : Cardiovascular Surgery, Jichi Medical University, Tochigi, JAPAN.

Mediastinitis is a serious and fatal complication after cardiac surgery,so prophylactic of its occurrence is very important.

Prophylactic Vaccum Assisted Closure(VAC) therapy after surgery has already been shown to be effective  in American and European countries, and prophylactic VAC therapy in midline wounds after open heart surgery has also been reported.

However, we do not have  enough experiences with prophylactic VAC therapy in Japan.

We applied VAC therapy in 134 patients considered at high risk of surgical site infection who underwent cardiovascular surgery via standard median sternotomy  between 2012 and 2015.

Only three of these patients (2.2%) developed surgical site infection caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis.

Prophylactic VAC therapy can reduce postoperative wound infection in high risk patients undergoing open heart surgery via full sternotomy.
