Title: Photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in water using Bi2CuO4
Summary:
Over the years there has been growing attention towards pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics in our main water bodies. Many of these antibiotics are pervasive pollutants and can pose threats to human health due to their toxicity. Conventional treatments are ineffective at removing and breaking down these pollutants, hence allowing them to remain persistent in the environment. Photocatalysis has emerged as an explored effective alternative method to eradicate antibiotics in water. A Photocatalyst produces reactive species when irradiated with light having energy greater than the band gap of the material, therefore converting organic compounds into non-toxic substances such as water and carbon dioxide. In this study, Bi2CuO4 have been tested for the degradation of tetracycline antibiotics in water using visible-light and ultraviolet irradiation.
