Title
Investigating the Solution Phase Fluorescence Quenching in a Graphene Oxide Derivative in the Presence of Tetracene
Author: Risini Chathma, Neranga Abeyasinghe
Introduction / Background
- Fluorescence quenching provides insight into molecular interactions and energy transfer mechanisms.
- Key for improving optoelectronic devices, solar cells, and semiconductors.
- Contributes to SDG 7 (Clean Energy) and SDG 12 (Sustainable Consumption & Production).
Objectives
- To investigate quenching of GO derivative fluorescence by tetracene.
- To identify energy transfer mechanisms involved.
Methods
- Synthesis: GO derivative via modified Hummers’ method
- Sample preparation: Mixture of GO + tetracene and two control samples at equal concentrations.
- Characterization techniques:
- UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy
- Fluorescence spectroscopy
- Raman spectroscopy
- Quantum yield measurement (Fluorescein as standard)
Results
- GO emission peaks has disappeared in the mixture.
- Quantum yield decreased, confirming quenching.
Discussion
- Quenching arises from reabsorption, vibronic coupling, and energy transfer.
- Mechanism demonstrates potential for efficient energy conversion in materials.
Conclusion
- Tetracene effectively quenches the fluorescence of GO derivatives through energy transfer.
- Findings support the design of sustainable optoelectronic materials and advanced energy technologies.
