Ultrasound guided ethanol ablation for recurrent symptomatic U2 thyroid cysts: our centre's early experiences

The traditional approaches to management of symptomatic thyroid cysts are surgery, which along with high costs incurred carries the risk of short and long term complications, and aspiration, which has a high recurrence rate. Ultrasound guided ethanol ablation (US-EA) of symptomatic thyroid cysts is a potentially effective, safe and cost-efficient alternative. Using a single puncture technique, the cyst is aspirated to dryness and then instilled with ethanol. The procedure is relatively low-risk (pain is the most reported side-effect) and there is a theoretical risk of laryngeal necrosis.
