Breaking the Pain Cycle: Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block in a Patient with Refractory Headaches
This case highlights the potential efficacy of the SPG block for refractory headaches. The SPG influences the trigemino-autonomic reflex and contains sensory fibers involved in headache, lacrimation, nasal congestion, conjunctival injection, and facial pain3. Its anatomical associations, including with the upper cervical roots, may explain its effect on head, face, neck, and upper back pain2. Given its low risk and growing evidence, the SPG block should be considered in patients with persistent headaches unresponsive to first-line therapies.
